They have been berated in the past for their wild parties, so for this year’s Christmas bash the Manchester United team decided to go a lot more low key.

They started off the night at the restaurant owned by United star Rio Ferdinand; Rosso but once the word was out that they were partying at Panacea night club, the wannabe WAG fraternity was out in force and descended upon the club in the hope of bagging themselves a player.

The line of ladies was way longer than any ordinary night at Panacea, and they all seemed to be in their brightest and tightest dressers to try and catch the eye of a footballing hero. Despite the freezing conditions, there was a distinct lack of jackets as these girls seemed determined to let their dresses, and there oh so obvious assets, do the talking.

The stars were certainly out if force with Robin Van Persie, Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, Phil Jones and stalward Ryan Giggs all snapped looking very dapper for their Christmas bash. The only notable absence was Wayne Rooney, who in light of past misdemeanour’s wisely chose to stay home with pregnant wife Coleen.

Van Persie, despite only joining the reds this season has clearly settled in well and led a rousing rendition of ‘Glory Glory Man Utd’ at Russo. The striker, bought from Arsenal for £24m, is one purchase that Alex Ferguson will certainly not be regretting as he has already scored 15 goals from 21 games, placing them 6 points clear at the top of the premiership.

As to whether any of the wannabes actually got up close and personal with one of the players remains a mystery, but watch out for what appears in the gossip columns.

It would seem that it is never too early for a Christmas party and that was proved by the host of famous faces that turned out for the charity Christmas lunch held by Carolyn Hughes PR. The event, which is now in it’s 5th and was held to raise funds for the ‘Wirral Witches’, Women in touch with Claire House, had quite a decent sprinkling of very glam looking Liverpool WAGs.

The Footie wives in attendance at the Gusto restaurant on Albert Dock where the lunch was held included Dani Lawrence, Jude Cisse, Shauna Muamba, Laura Warnock, Nicola Carragher and most famous Liverpool WAG of them all; Alex Gerrard., who looked stunning the understated style that she carries off so well, wannabe WAGs take note. Also in attendance to support the cause were celebrity designers Tony Burke and Philip Armstrong.

Peter Price popped in with his fellow pantomime star Liz Mclarnon during the lunch break from rehearsals, and he found time to lead a Christmas sing-a-long to really kick off the party. Simon Ross from Radio City was on duty as host and the entertainment included the soul sounds of Stephen Bayliss, DJ Mina and Jade Porter belted out some floor fillers that had everyone up on their feet.

Carolyn Hughes spoke of the event and said the Christmas lunch had been a huge success and had raised £3000 for the Wirral Witches and the success it enjoyed every year was mainly due to the amazing support they got from such lovely people. She added that as in previous years, once this lunch was held Christmas had officially started and she was touched that it meant so much to so many people.

Sam Allardyce, the West Ham manager, believes that lifetime bans and modern technology combined are the only way to put a stop to fan unrest that continues to occur at the Barclays Premier League matches.

This week many calls have been made to put netting in areas of the grounds that allow fans to be seated close to the players. The hope is that the netting could help prevent some incidents from occurring such as Rio Ferdinand getting a cut above his eye after being hit by a coin that was tossed at him at the Manchester game from an opposing fan.

However Allardyce believes that netting will just encourage fans to get rowdier and get around it. ON the other hand he believes that lengthy bans and video footage will be a more powerful deterrent since they will teach fans that abhorrent behavior will not be accepted.

He explained that the more they utilise CCTV to weed out fans that are acting out and continue to ban fans for life the more they will reduce the chances of this type of thing occurring again. Allardyce added that you do not want to have to cage in people, but that only adds to anger on fan’s behalf.

The BBC is set to broadcast all of the UEFA European Women’s Championship games that take place in Sweden next July. As part of the deal, the network will have the rights to show live coverage exclusively of all three of England’s matches including both the final and the two semi-finals. The coverage will be aired on BBC Two and BBC Three.

All off the other peak time matches will also be aired on BBC Three. Four years ago when the Women’s Championship games were held in Germany Hope Powell’s team ended up suffering a 6-2 loss to Germany. They were selected to play in the July tournament due to a spectacular win over Croatia of 3-0 last September that left them eligible for the Championship.

At the Championship the women’s team will face Russia, France, and Spain during the group heats. Barbara Slater, the BBC Director, stated that they are very happy to be adding the UEFA European Women’s Championship to their strong portfolio of women’s sports that will premier on the station.

Tony Sage, the Perth Glory owner, has decided to give up on his goal of getting David Beckham to come and play for Australia after a chance meeting between the two occurred last week in London.

Sage happened to bump into Beckham during the Spice Girls inspired new stage show that premier at the O2 Arena in London. He explained that he was rebuffed by Beckham when he asked the England captain if he might be considering a move down to the south.

Sage who was a special guest of Mel B, stated that he had the chance to chat with David for a second and asked the football star if he had ever thought about coming to play for Australia. He went on to say that Beckham clearly looked him in the eye and said it was a nice idea but would be too far away from his businesses.

Beckham is in the process of scouting for a new club after he decided to call it quits on his five year stint with the LA Galaxy team in America last month. After the announcement was released the Football Federation of Australia claimed that they were negotiating with his agent.
