English supporters are not interested in buying tickets for the three away Euro 2012 fixtures in June. The tickets have been for sale on the Football Association website and 12,000 tickets (nearly half) have been returned to UEFA for the games against Ukraine, France and Sweden – all being played in the Ukraine. The tickets will now go on sale to the general public.

The FA anticipates up to 10,000 tickets may be bought independently by fans but expects that only another 3,000 tickets to the games will be sold. England’s fans pride themselves on their support of the national team and it means that its supporters will be outnumbered for the first time in many years at a UEFA fixture

Kevin Miles, of the Football Supporters Federation says the downturn in the economy has certainly contributed to the poor ticket sales, as has the cost of accommodation and travel. Prices at hotels have been “inflated” and the long distances involved mean airfares will be expensive anyway.

The other issue, according to Miles is that although the matches are being marketed as a holiday package, neither of the venues – Donetsk, or Kiev – are viewed as holiday destinations. Miles, speaking to BBC Sport told the program that the lack of attractions in the cities, such as a beach left fans wondering what they would do between games.

Another concern is safety. Sol Campbell, the England defender, speaking on the BBC’s Panorama program urged Asian and Black fans to “stay at home” and not travel to the Ukraine and instead watch the games live on television. The show featured film of Asian and Black students being assaulted and this would have clearly put the issue into the forefront of supporter’s minds.

For several years the Foreign Office has had an advisory caution in place for Asian and Black tourists considering visiting the Ukraine. The warning has been in place for several years and it would almost certainly have had an impact on these fans considering attending the matches in the Ukraine.

However, Miles feels that while potential abuse of fans could be an issue it is probably not the main reason for the poor return on ticket sales. He thinks the majority of fans have made up their minds for a variety of other reasons, including cost and the decision to attend other Euro games instead.

It was thought that several over age players were going to be chosen from Manchester United to play football in the Olympic Games that are occurring this summer. However, Sir Alex Ferguson has just made the announcement that the only overage player from the team that can be selected to play in the Olympic Games is Ryan Giggs.

The coach, Stuart Pearce, was potentially going to pick Jonny Evans or Paul Scholes, but this has been made an impossibility because of Sir Alex’s decision. A court ruling in 2008 also made selection of football players for the Olympics rather challenging. This court decision stated that football clubs have no obligation to release their players to play in the Olympic Games and it is a decision that they will have to make by themselves.

Ryan Giggs is not officially been chosen for the tournament, this decision just decides whether you will be allowed to play in the Olympic Games. However, Mr Giggs has stated that if you were asked to play on the Olympic squad, he would accept the invitation.

Each squad in the Olympic Games are allowed to select three players who are over the normal age limit and Mr Giggs falls into this category. The question was whether the Football Association would allow Mr Giggs to play because of his age.

A spokesperson from the Football Association has refused to comment on whether they have received any communications from Manchester United about the issue. It seems as if this means that a legal battle about the issue is not going to take place, especially considering the typically accepting position of Manchester United that young players don’t get involved in Euro 2012. The original court decision was about whether to release players for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

An Italian football match last night saw incredible scenes unfold when the manager of one of the teams playing physically assaulted one of his players. The assault took place after the manager took the player off in order to substitute him and the event was captured on television.

The substitution came at half time when the manager Delio Rossi substituted Adem Ljajic. The player was obviously such a great fan of the decision and he proceeded to sarcastically clap the decision by his manager. Once that he was off, the manager pointed his finger at him and clearly began to verbally reprimand him.

However, this did not seem to be enough for the manager because after the player sat down in the dugout, the manager jumped into it and slapped him in the face. It then appeared as if he wa about to punch him but he was dragged away by other people in the dugout before anything could happen.

The president of the team made the instant decision to sack the manager and has commented, “I’m sad that I have to make this decision, it is clear that months of stress had been building up for the manager and they all came out of one moment. He has never acted in this way before and I’m just sad that I have to make the decision to fire him.

“That said, it is clear that this sort of action cannot go unpunished as there was no provocation strong enough to cause this kind of response.” The player is also going to face reprimand for his actions but they are unlikely to be as severe as those that have been facing the manager. It is currently unclear who will be taking over the management role at the club in the immediate future.

The organisers of the Olympic Games which are taking place this summer have still not announced when the remaining tickets for football matches at the games are going to go on sale. The reason for the delay is because the online systems are still being tested to make sure that they will function properly.

Football is not the only sport that has seen a delay in the release of tickets and the tickets were supposed to go on sale earlier this month however, they have been pushed back until the start of next month. A spokesperson representing the games has stated that the system is going to be back online shortly and all the technical problems should have been resolved.

The original site responsible for selling the tickets experienced an enormous amount of demand which caused it to crash. The spokesperson stated in an interview with the BBC, “Before we put these tickets on sale we want to make sure that the system is working as well as possible. It is essential that we do the appropriate testing so it doesn’t crash again when it starts up.”

The chairman of Locog has stated, “We don’t want to push the release of the tickets forward unnecessarily. It is best to be absolutely sure about systems before we release the tickets and this is what we’re doing. We are also currently working on finalising the seating plans for the venue and this is also pushing back the release of the final batch of tickets a little.”

Images released of new M&S suits for the England football team

On the 23rd April, St George’s Day, came the official launch of the suits that the English football team will be wearing as their formal dress at the Euro 2012 competition.

The suits have been both designed and supplied by Marks & Spencer and the images show a traditional team line up with a bit of a twist; there are 3 real lions lined up alongside the players.

This is the fifth year that M&S has been the official tailor for the England team, having supplied them with their formal wardrobe since 2007. For these latest suits, their bespoke in house tailors have followed guidelines set down by the England team itself. They have sourced the finest British fabrics and finishes and made each suit a perfect fit for every player.

The suits have been specially created to be lightweight and comfortable in the hot summer temperatures of Poland and the Ukraine. Richard price is the director of menswear at M&S and he has said that this has resulted in modern and slim fitting Autograph two buttoned suits that deserve a place in the wardrobe of every football fan.

The two-button single breasted suit jacket is sculpted to a slimming modern block with sleeve head roll shoulders for a classic fitting, slim silhouette. Additional styling details include narrower lapels and slanted pockets, along with impeccably finished internals featuring the World Cup winners star. Trousers are flat fronted and slim fitting with an elegant modern shape. The suit is cut from 100% British wool fabric in bright navy, complimented by a navy stripe tie, crisp plain white shirt and pointed Gibson shoes.

“We’re really pleased to continue our relationship with M&S and are delighted with the latest suit that has been designed for the team. The players are all really happy with how it looks and feels and we’ve had a fantastic reaction to the iconic lions imagery, it really brings the partnership to life” said Sean McAuliffe, FA Group Head of Business Development.

To support the launch of the images and the campaign as a whole, M&S has partnered with the Sun Online to create an exciting online hub. Packed with behind the scenes video from the team photo shoot, exclusive competitions, quizzes and a virtual application that allows users to join the team. The microsite will also launch on St George’s Day.
