Ticket touts arrested at Arsenal and Liverpool The home grounds of Arsenal and Liverpool were the scene of a swoop on ticket touts, with eight arrests being made. The first four were arrested near the Emirate Stadium, Arsenal’s home ground, before kick off on Saturday. They have been bailed to appear in court next month. The following day the other four were arrested nearby Liverpool’s stadium, Anfield and are still in custody. The arrested were all men aged between 23-47.

The undercover operation to catch these criminals in codenamed Podium, and one of the officers working on this case stated that Ticket touting was illegal and the criminals were gaining financially by exploiting clubs and fans.

Genuine fans should always ensure that they buy their tickets from registered outlets, and never off a man in the street or in a pub. They also run the risk of getting given tickets which put them in amongst the supporters for the opposition. Operation Podium is a working partnership between the Metropolitan police, Merseyside police and the Emirates and Anfield stadium.

Africa pushes for World Cup places Fifa the football world’s governing body is meeting to determine for the World Cup 2014 how many places each continent will receive. In the 2010 tournament Africa received six selection since South Africa were the hosts, but Africa most likely will be reduced to only five selections, due to their poor showing in the 2010 Cup and could be lower even more because of the amount of pressure being applied from areas that want more representation.

What also cause an impact at the meetings is the expected political fight between present Fifa President Sepp Blatter and likely challenger Mohamed Bin Hammam. Bin Hammam wants more presence from his Asian Confederation presently their representation is four plus a playoff berth.

The North and Central American and Caribbean region (Conccaf) want to add to their current three places plus a playoff berth and because Brazil is hosting there will probably be another spot given to South America.

Following two-day meetings in Zurich, Fifa will hold a news conference and announce their decisions on Thursday they will also announce that the 2015 Women’s World Cup hosts will be Canada. Also in limbo is who will host the U17 World Cup for 2013 and the women’s U17 for 2014.

The biggest matches may soon all be free We may soon all be able to watch the football World Cup and European Championships for free, without having to pay for satellite broadcasts or go to the pub for the same reason.

In a landmark ruling, the European General Court (EGC) has declared that EU member states can designate these events as ‘events of major importance’ under the EU (which directive), which would prevent exclusive television rights to these events. The case came about as a result of football’s governing bodies FIFA and UEFA challenging the right of the UK and Belgium to show these events on free terrestrial TV.

This ruling could open the floodgates to a number of major sporting events being treated in the same way. The issue is likely to go on, however – with the amount of money involved in staging these events, it is unlikely that UEFA and FIFA will leave it at that. The ultimate appeal lies with the European Court of Human Rights, however, some experts believe that such an appeal is unlikely to be successful.

Other events that are treated as protected in the same way in Britain include the Olympics, Wimbledon, The Grand National and Derby horse races.

Steve McLaren may be returning to England Former England football team manager Steve McLaren could be on his way back to England, if he has his way, fresh from getting the sack from Wolfsburg, after seven months in charge. This followed a poor spell of results that saw the team just outside the relegation places in the German Bundesliga.

McLaren is still held in very high regard, despite the England and Wolfsburg experiences, as a result of his time at Manchester United as Assistant Manager and as Middleborough Manager. He also won the Dutch championship last year, as manager of FC Twente.

McLaren would even be prepared to work for a Championship club, saying that there are just as many challenges in that league, highlighting the experiences of Blackpool, now in the Premiership.

There is no doubt that he would receive a mixed welcome if he returned, given the performances of the England team with him in charge.
